Discover Cusco with an Unforgettable Cultural and Archaeological Tour

The City Tour in Cusco, also known as the Cusco City Tour, is an unmissable experience for every visitor arriving in the historical capital of Peru. This tour is ideal for those who want to begin their Andean adventure with an enriching introduction to the history, architecture, and worldview of the ancient Tahuantinsuyo, the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.

Throughout this guided tour, we will explore both the colonial city and the main Inca archaeological sites located around Cusco. It’s the perfect activity for your first day, as it doesn’t require much physical effort and allows you to gradually acclimatize to the altitude (3,399 meters above sea level).

What Will We See on the Cusco City Tour?

1. Qoricancha

We’ll begin our tour at Qoricancha, or the “Temple of the Sun,” the most important religious site of the Inca Empire. This sanctuary was covered in gold and dedicated to Inti, the Sun god. Later, the Spanish built the Convent of Santo Domingo over its foundations, showcasing the process of cultural syncretism. Today, it stands as one of the best examples of Inca-colonial architecture.

Archaeological Sites Outside Cusco

After exploring the city center, we’ll board our tourist transport to visit the breathtaking ruins located in the hills surrounding Cusco:

2. Sacsayhuamán

One of the most monumental feats of Inca engineering. This ceremonial fortress stands out for its enormous carved stone blocks, some reaching up to 9 meters in height and weighing 120 tons. It served religious, military, and astronomical purposes. From here, you’ll enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Cusco.

3. Qenqo

This ceremonial center was used for religious rituals and mummification. Its name means “labyrinth,” and it’s easy to see why: underground passages, hidden chambers, and a main altar carved into stone reveal the complexity of Andean religious thought.

4. Puca Pucará

Known as the “red fortress” due to the color of its stones at sunset, Puca Pucará served as a military checkpoint and resting place for travelers of the empire. Its design—featuring terraces, walls, and stairways—demonstrates the Inca’s strategic planning.

5. Tambomachay

This complex is renowned for its refined hydraulic architecture. Also called the “Inca’s Bath,” it consists of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls that still function today. It is believed to have been a site of purification or water worship, a vital element in Andean cosmology.
